After Mercury Records president David Massey heard Decker's demos he passed her work to L.A. Reid head of the affiliated Island/Def Jam label group and Reid agreed to sign her up for a record deal. Jessie James, her moniker for her album that she dropped under the same name in August 2009, was self-titled. Jessie James enjoyed a modest amount of success and Wanted reached the Top 40 on the Singles Charts. Decker, who had considered herself to be a country musician in the past, was astonished to learn that her album wasn't promoted and made with an eye on a mainstream audience. Two more singles off the album stiffed Decker struggled with the label's management for more control over her music, and the next track Boys in the Summer was more of a country-centric release. The second album of Decker's was announced with the title Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury was able to cancel it, and three of her country songs failed. The album was later canceled.
